Happy Labor Day SCFA!

Here’s to our Union!

Here’s to our union and unions everywhere! We celebrate our labor movement and rights won to the 8-hour day, better pay, weekends, health care benefits for ourselves and our families as we define them, reproductive and disability rights; and our choice, again and again, to come together as unions and lift each other up.

Past & Futures

California first recognized Labor Day as a state holiday in 1892. View a timeline of key labor history from our affiliate, the National Education Association to learn more. Locally, the California Museum‘s temporary exhibit, “Help Wanted/Leave Now,” through Jan 10, 2027 sheds light on why and how immigration rights and anti-racism are integral to unionism today. For inspiration, have a listen to a 5-minute poem built by Amanda Gorman for the Services Employees International Union, delivered by SEIU members and Gorman, “When We Work.”

The Universal Declaration of Human Rights, 1948, delineates union rights in article 23 and in article 24 the right to rest. Labor and rest go hand in hand. If you and yours are celebrating your right to rest and having a barbecue, check out this page of union-made barbecue products from the AFL-CIO.
